In 2010 HBO films produced “Temple Grandin”, a biopic of an Autistic woman who has become one of the top scientists in the human livestock handling industry.
Award winning actress Claire Danes took on the title role of Temple Grandin and did an excellent job portraying the Autistic scientist.
The story in the movie starts out with Grandin going to an Uncles farm after her graduation from high school, At her uncle’s farm, she began her understanding of cows and became inspired to create her “Squeeze box”.
Grandin, like many Autistics, does not like to be touched, but still needed the calming effects of a hug to help her self-regulate. Her squeeze box, which she first created in college, helped her calm down and self-regulate – which we learned later that after spending time in her squeeze box she would emerge calmer and would be able to better interact with others.
The movie chronicles her journey to becoming a leader, if not a pioneer, in the human livestock industry.
The movie depicts the challenges she had in college, learning how to speak as a child, bullying throughout her life and the sexism that women had to endure in the late 1960’s/early 1970’s.
Through all the adversity and challenges, she faced, Temple never gave up on her dream or what she believed in creating. When she did encounter a setback, she either found a way around it and/or received support from her support system.
If I had to share a trigger warning it would be that some of the sounds in the movie (ceiling fan and others) where amplified. I believe this was done to demonstrate to the audience of Allistics how noise does sound and/or impact many of us on the spectrum. Therefore, if you are sensitive to noise, you may want to watch this movie with the volume lower.
