Review: #Unmasking Autism by Devon Price is a book EVERY Autistic Adult should read from cover to cover!

This book is a must read, a primer, and for want of a better phrase, the bible that every Autistic adult, regardless of if or when they were diagnosed, to start understanding (or better understand) what Autism is and the challenges Autistic endure.

One of the first things I did when I started my journey, from suspecting I was Autistic to receiving confirmation of my suspicions, was to start reading everything I could about Autism.  One book that was recommended to me by an Autism group I had joined on Facebook was #Unmasking Autism: Discovering the New Faces of Neurodiversity by Devon Price Ph.D.

Dr. Price does not pull any punches.  Price shares his experience as a transgendered Autistic as well as experiences of others on the spectrum from all walks of life to help the reader better understand the Autistic life.

Dr. Price does touch upon Autism in many communities including that stereotypical white male middle to upper income person, as well as Autistic women (who are underrepresented in our community) and Autism in many minorities groups including black and brown people, and practically every sexual orientation in the LGBTQIA+ community.

In this book Dr. Price breaks down:

  • What Autism is
  • Who are the masked Autistics – this will help you discover many of the ways you mask your Autism and some ways that you may be masking that you are not aware of.
  • The cost of masking is the portion of the book where Dr. Price helps you release the price you are paying, and the price every Autistic is paying (not to mention our society and the world is paying) when we mask our true identities.

That is followed by Dr. Price inviting you to rethink Autism

Chapter six of the book, Dr, Price helps you build your Autistic life including sharing some strategies for you to use to stay regulated and manage sensory issues.

Dr, Price addresses the fact that living life as an Autistic adult can be very lonely.  Although many may believe that we Autistic like isolation, the truth is that many of us want to have friendships, relationships and more.  In chapter 7 of #Unmaksing Autism DR. Price shares with us how we can cultivate relationships with other Autistics as well as with Allistics.

Last, but certainly not least, Dr. Price gives us some strategies, as well as the pros and cons of some of these strategies, on how we as Autistics can advocate for a more inclusive world for all of us.
